THE CENTRAL OFFICE PRODUCTION ORDER SYSTEM (COPO), CHEVY PRODUCT GURU, VINCE PIGGINS,
FOUND A LOOP HOLE WITH THE BAN AND CREATED THE ULTIMATE CAMARO - THE LEGENDARY ZL1.



IT WAS AN OUTRAGEOUS IDEA, SO OUTRAGEOUS THAT IT MET HUGE RESISTANCE FROM INSIDE
GENERAL MOTORS AS SOON AS IT WAS RAISED: A SHORT PRODUCTION RUN OF 1969 CAMAROS
EQUIPPED WITH THE ALL-ALUMINUM 427 ZL1 ENGINE. THE 427 WAS NEVER INTENDED BY CHEVYS
BRASS FOR STREET DUTY BUT PIGGINS WOULD NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. CORPORATE POLICY
WAS SUCCESSFULLY CIRCUMVENTED AND 69 ZL1's ACHIEVED NEAR MYTHICAL STATUS BEING
ONE OF THE MOST ASS-KICKINGEST MACHINES TO EVER ROLL OUT OF DETROIT!!!



MOST ZL1/COPO CARS HAVE PLAIN BODIES. OF THE 69 COPO ZL1 CAMAROS BUILT, TWO WERE ORDERED WITH
THE RALLY SPORT (RS) APPEARANCE PACKAGE, VINYL TOP & 427 BADGING. ONE OF THOSE TWO,  CAR # 55,
WAS FEATURED IN THE 2008 MECUM SPRING CLASSIC AUCTION  AS AN UNRESTORED ORIGINAL WITH
ONLY 7,700 MILES. IT IS THAT CAR THAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS TRIBUTE  ZL1 CAMARO.
