FROM 1964 THROUGH 1977 AS A MID-SIZED MODEL, WAS ONE OF
GENERAL MOTORS MOST SUCCESSFUL CARS. CHEVELLE MODELS RANGED FROM
ECONOMICAL FAMILY CARS TO
POWERFUL COUPES AND CONVERTIBLES. ORIGINALLY, IT WAS INTENDED TO COMPETE
WITH THE FORD FAIRLANE.

EARLY DESIGN PHOTOS SHOW WHAT WOULD EVENTUALLY BE THE CHEVELLE WEARING NOVA
NAMEPLATES, THE
NAME THEN BEING USED FOR THE TOP TRIM LEVEL IN THE SMALLER CHEVY II
SERIES. IT WAS ALSO THE BASIS FOR
THE NOW POPULAR
PONTIAC BEAUMONT, A RE-TRIMMED MODEL SOLD ONLY BY CANADIAN PONTIAC
DEALERS.

THE CHEVELLE SS REPRESENTED CHEVROLET'S ENTRY INTO THE MUSCLE CAR BATTLE.
EARLY '64 AND '65 CHEVELLES HAD A MALIBU SS BADGE ON THE REAR QUARTER
WHILE THE SOUGHT-AFTER Z16 OPTION HAD IT'S EMBLEM ON THE FRONT
FENDER (ONLY 201 SS396's PRODUCED). IN 1966, THE CHEVELLE SS BECAME A
REGULAR SERIES OF IT'S OWN. THE HIGH PERFORMANCE VERSION, CALLED THE
SS396, HAD IT'S OWN LINE OF ENGINES AND PERFORMANCE EQUIPMENT.

FOR 1967, THE 325 HP VERSION OF THE 396 V8 WAS AGAIN STANDARD BUT
THE L34 UPGRADE LOST 10 HP, TO 350,
BECAUSE GM's NEW POLICY AGAINST ANY CAR BUT CORVETTE HAVING MORE THAN 1
HP PER 10 POUNDS OF CURB
WEIGHT. HOWEVER, IN A SECOND UNDER HOOD REVERSAL, THE 375 HP L78 WAS NO
LONGER LISTED IN SALES
